The Beatitudes of America

I wrote this a few years ago on my old blog but it seems even more pertinent and true now particularly after the actual beatitudes were read at the most recent American presidential inauguration.

These are some thoughts I had, as I was reading Jesus for President and Matthew 5, about what the Beatitudes of the United States might be. I was thinking about the conflict of many worldly, specifically American, values and Kingdom of God values. Here's what I came up with.

Blessed are the rich for theirs are the kingdoms of the world.

Blessed are the people pleasers for they will get a pat on the back.

Blessed are the powerful for for they shall police the the earth.

Blessed are those that hunger and thirst for instant gratification for they shall be filled... then emptied over and over and over.

Blessed are those who don't show mercy to their enemies for they will call themselves ordained by God.

Blessed are the strong in mind for they shall create their own gods.

Blessed are the warmongers for they shall be prized children of Uncle Sam.

Blessed are those who persecute for America's sake for theirs are the kingdoms of the earth.

Blessed are you when you persecute people in the name of God and country.

Rejoice and be glad for your reward is great on earth for they revered the patriots before you.

Justin writes about theology, ethics, culture, and occasionally food.

It should be noted that while Justin is indeed an editor, his blog will not always reflect that. There will be typos, split infinitives, misplaced punctuation, and any number of grammatical mistakes because editing one's own work is near impossible.
